Fergie Memorial Statue

The ?little grey? Ferguson tractor wrote itself into the annals of local history through the integral part it played in saving Wentworth from the 1956 floods. Flood waters raced towards Wentworth via both the Darling and Murray rivers, resulting in a third of Wentworth going under water. Wentworth became an island in an inland sea. The tenacious will of the Wentworth people saw them stay and fight to save their town from ruin when all authorities were urging them to evacuate. During the floods the roar of the little Fergies could be heard 24 hours a day as volunteers patched and built crumbling and new levee banks to fortify Wentworth from the rising waters. An earlier monument to the town-saving Fergies was erected at the corner of Adelaide and Darling Streets in Wentworth in 1959 and still remains there to this day.

Mungo National Park contains the longest continuous record of Aboriginal life in Australia, dating back over 50,000 years ago. Who's better to tell the story of Mungo, than the traditional caretakers of this land? Harry Nanya Tours has experienced Paakantyi Aboriginal guides leading the way. Tours explore Mungo National Park, departing from Wentworth, Mildura, or Mungo. The Mungo tour takes you to the enormous flank of clay and sand that make up the Walls of China, and which surround part of the ancient dried-up Lake Mungo. Harry Nanya Tours is named after Harry Nanya, one of the last Aborigines in NSW to live by traditional hunting techniques. About 1860, Nanya left his camp and vanished into waterless country with two women and a steel axe. He reappeared more than thirty years later, with 27 children. Harry Nanya Tours is an accredited Aboriginal owned and operated multi award-winning business.

Junction Island Nature Reserve and Canoe Tree

The Junction Island Nature Reserve and walking track is the shoal of land between the Darling and Murray Rivers. The junction sandbar is where a large number of Aborigines, armed with spears and weapons, threatened Captain Sturt as he sailed down the Murray on his expedition to find the inland sea. Luckily the Aboriginals were calmed down by four Aboriginals from across the river whom Sturt had befriended earlier and therefore the intruder's presence was accepted. You can visit the Island and stand on the footbridge between both the Darling and Murray Rivers or walk to the point where the rivers meet. Standing right in the middle of Australia's two greatest rivers is a unique Australian experience not to be missed. Flora, fauna, wildlife and birdlife abound within this island reserve. A canoe tree is located at the beginning of the walking track that leads to the point.
