Cockatoo Cottage - Pooncarie

Cockatoo Cottage is a fully self-contained, two bedroom cottage, located in Pooncarie; fully furnished throughout and has a gas space heater, as well as reverse cycle air-conditioner in every room. The cottage has a veranda with a small table and chairs, as well as a barbecue on the rear lawn area, next to undercover parking and a lockable garage. The cottage is ideal for three or four people, or one or two couples to share in clean and comfortable surrounds, within walking distance to hotel, cafe and weir on the Darling River. The cottage makes a perfect base to explore this section of the majestic Darling River to fish, canoe or just relax. Within a short drive visit Mungo National Park or Kinchega National Park as a day trip and explore the area, then easily return to a comfortable overnight stay, relaxed, ready for more adventures the next day.

Darling River Run

The Darling River Run is a trip through time and the heart of Outback NSW. Best done by four wheel drive it runs between Brewarrina in the North and Wentworth in the South, taking in Broken Hill, Lake Mungo, Kinchega and Mount Gundabooka National Parks which are just astonishing, and classic outback towns like Wilcannia, Menindee, Pooncarrie, Tilpa and Louth. The drive more or less tracks along the Darling River before it joins the Murray at Wentworth in the south. When you tour this route, you'll be re-tracing the steps of explorers Sturt, Mitchell, Dowling, Burke and Wills and the history and heritage of the run are matched by the vastness of the landscape. Nature lovers will find plenty of wildlife through the region and a bird watching tour of the vast Menindee Lakes system is recommended.

Kookaburra Cottage is located in Pooncarie, and has four bedrooms all with reverse cycle air-conditioning. The cottage is fully furnished, including whitegoods, crockery, cutlery and comes with satellite television, and music CDs. The rear boundary is the Majestic Darling River, and it is all located a short walk to Telegraph Hotel, General Store, and the Wharf Cafe. The cottage is ideally located for short drive to boat ramp for a spot of fishing or yabbying, or a day trip to Mungo National Park or Kinchega National Park.

Magpie Cottage is a fully self-contained, four bedroom house in Pooncarie with the Darling River acting as the rear boundary. The cottage can sleep up to eight people in comfort, in four bedrooms all in single beds with two bathrooms. The cottage is fully furnished throughout and has reverse cycle air-conditioning in every bedroom, and the lounge room as well as a wood space heater. White-goods are supplied as well as crockery and cutlery. Outside is an enclosed shed/rumpus room with a dart board, table tennis table, fridge, freezer and a barbecue located on rear lawn area next to undercover parking for two or more cars. Cottage is walking distance from General Store, Telegraph Hotel and Wharf Cafe, or a short distance to the boat ramp for fishing or yabbying or a day trip to surrounding National Parks.

Mungo Shearers Quarters

Mungo National Park is located in Outback New South Wales and can be easily accessed from Wentworth, Mildura and Broken Hill. Located within the park are the recently up-graded Mungo Shearer's Quarters. Staying on Mungo National Park provides a great opportunity to experience the park at your leisure and return to a hot shower and comfortable bed at the end of the day. Mungo Shearers Quarters has five rooms and sleeps 27 people. A separate block is located within the complex with toilets/showers and a communal kitchen. In the middle of the complex are picnic tables to share with other visitors. Bookings are essential. Please contact Buronga National Park office. There is plenty to see and do in this amazing park.

*** Latest event details are yet to be confirmed *** Come and enjoy a unique outback experience at the Pooncarie Cup Race Meeting There are six races in all, entry includes a race book and everyone under 16 is free. There will be hot and cold food available. Tea, coffee and cold drinks and bar facilities will be operating, however please don't bring your own alcohol. People are welcome to bring chairs, blankets and a picnic lunch. There will be bookmakers and a TAB on course taking bets on local and interstate racing. For those who want to stay for the night there will be camping amenities available at Pooncarie multi-purpose park which is located approximately two kilometres from the racecourse. Also, don't forget there will be ample free parking and an all-weather airstrip, adjacent to the course, for those who want to fly their own aircraft.

The biennial Pooncarie Field Day, held at the racecourse near, the Darling River, has definitely made its mark. If you're interested in anything rural, then this is a day you won't want to miss. There are a 100 plus exhibits on display including the latest sheep breeds and gleaming Utes. Demonstrations are held throughout the day, in which you can witness the skills of sheep dogs, or see goat dogs yard a mob of feral goats, watch machine and blade shearers in action and hear competitor whip cracking A fantastic family day out with all sorts of competitions, events and activities to entertain young and old alike. Guess the weight of the Ram, enter the Boot Art Competition or try your hand at the ladies Trailer backing competition. Pooncarrie Field Day is a unique Australian experience!

The Pooncarie Hotel Motel is clean, quiet and friendly accommodation only 150 metres from the Darling River. There are four units with en suites and eight other rooms with shared bathroom facilities. All rooms have air-conditioning and meals are available seven days a week, either in the dining room or outside in the beer garden. Pooncarie and surrounds is full of much natural splendour, from the beauty of the river to the kangaroos that hop around the town at dusk. Enjoy the Pooncarie golf course which will test the best of golfers. Pooncarie has a population of 84 people and has won many tidy towns awards. There is an annual race meeting in early October which has become a tradition throughout the outback. For the air traveller there is an all weather air strip with lights just two kilometres from town. Guests can be transported to and from the hotel.

Walls Of China Mungo National Park

Mungo National Park is the focal point of the Willandra Lakes Region World Heritage Area. The lunette known as the 'Walls of China' is one of the main highlights of Mungo National Park. It is a 30 kilometre long dune formation which protects many thousands of years of human history. A boardwalk has been constructed to protect this incredibly fragile and sensitive environment. A visit to the Walls allows a view across the ancient dry lake bed of Lake Mungo. All Aboriginal sites and objects are protected under the National Parks and Wildlife Act and must not be disturbed in any way. Discovery tours led by the traditional owners of the area are conducted during school holiday periods. Tours are also available through Commercial Tour Operators.
