Afghan Mosque

The Mosque is situated on the site of the former 'Camel Camp' where Afghan and Indian Camel drivers loaded and unloaded their camel teams, from the earliest days of Broken Hill. It was constructed around 1891 as a place of worship for the followers of the Prophet Mohammed (or Mahomet) and is the only surviving Mosque in Australia which was built by early cameleers. The Mosque's alcove points toward Mecca, and prayer rugs have been left by worshippers in appreciation of the Mosque. In 1968 The Broken Hill Historical Society renovated the building in recognition of a unique, but important phase in the development of transport in the West Darling District of New South Wales.

Barrier Ranges Sunset Sculptures

The Sculpture Symposium was created in 1993 by Lawrence Beck and 12 sculptors from countries including; Georgia, Syria, Mexico, Bathurst Island and Australia, all of whom have created sandstone masterpieces. They are situated on a hill top in the outback, 12 kilometres north of Broken Hill in the Living Desert Area. This is a great place to be at sunset. Take in the atmosphere of the surrounding country side and the hilltop's beautiful artworks! Each sculptor worked on a monolith of the finest Wilcannia sandstone, which is visible for over 100 kilometres. All work was carried out by hand and was completed in four months. The blocks, up to 14 feet high and each weighing up to eight tons, were discovered in the desert and transported approximately 250 kilometres. The Sculpture Symposium was opened on 23 May 1993 with a dedication to a great humanitarian, the late Professor Fred Hollows.

Howard William Steer Art Gallery

Howard William Steer has lived his whole life in Broken Hill, having been born there in 1947. He has been painting and winning art prizes for the past 27 years. The majority of Howard?s paintings depict the people of the outback and their struggle against the harshness of the Australian environment. The struggle that early miners had in gaining a living in the Broken Hill mines and their constant union battles to gain acceptable working conditions are also a favourite theme. A predominant feature throughout Howard?s work depicts his sense of humour. Howard's "gossamer winged" flying doctor, features in many works.

Julie Hart Gallery

Julie Hart has become recognised as a vibrant landscape artist, with unlimited potential in her field, who is not only able to create and capture a surreal depth of image, but also a perception of movement in her paintings, that many dream of, but few ever attain. Julie carries the prestige of the Hart name, but as yet not the price and this creates an excellent point at which to start a serious art collection, or add to the credibility of an existing collection. Perceived by many to be the one to carry her fathers mantle (although not as prolific as Pro) this makes her work attractive to both art lovers and investors alike. Over the last several years, demand has doubled for Julie's work due to the ascetic appeal of her paintings and in part to the free and honest approach she has taken to her painting.

Line of Lode

Line of Lode Miner's Memorial and restaurant is a dramatic, iconic new structure on the edge of the mullock heap that dissects Broken Hill. It is a memorial to the 800 or more miners who lost their lives working along the Line of Lode. The building itself is a metaphor for the underground lives of the miners, evoking the damp, claustrophobic underground environment and audio-visuals of miners at work. The views over Broken Hill are spectacular and there is a cafe and souvenir shop.
